This year has brought a stream of CEO announcements making their stance on AI explicit

I started researching and talking about the future of work + AI over six years ago.
Back then, panels were debating the warm-up question: “Will AI reshape jobs?”
Today, that debate is over. CEOs aren’t speculating anymore. This year has brought a stream of CEO announcements (most recently from Accenture and Walmart this week) making it explicit:
🔸 Accenture: Employees who can’t be retrained for AI will be “exited.”
🔸 Amazon: AI agents will be everywhere, reducing total corporate headcount.
🔸 Shopify: AI proficiency is now baseline and built into performance reviews.
🔸 Duolingo: No new hires unless teams prove AI can’t do the work.
🔸 Fiverr: “AI is coming for your jobs… and mine, too.”
🔸 Salesforce: Thousands of roles cut because “I need less heads.”
🔸 Walmart: “AI is going to change literally every job.” Headcount will stay flat despite growth plans, as roles are eliminated or transformed.
Anthropic’s Dario Amodei has been warning that this is happening faster than people think. The above announcements suggest he’s right.
At a Sequoia conference this week, I connected with Chief People Officers from Fortune 500 companies. The same issue dominated every conversation: how to redesign organizations, reskill workforces, and navigate a reality where AI is now shaping headcount strategy.
Leaders aren’t whispering about “efficiencies” anymore. They’re telling employees, explicitly and in writing, that AI is disrupting jobs.
If you run a team, org design now starts with what AI can do, and you hire for the delta. If you’re an operator, the equation flips: your leverage is proving you can do what AI cannot.
